ABOUT US

Founded in the Spring of 2007 by Cheryl Curtis, who had been part of a similar and successful writers' group in Victoria, B.C., the London Writers' Society became a formal society with a dues-paying membership on September 20, 2007. With our activities coordinated by a four-person executive committee of member-volunteers, we offer information, support, community, and exposure for London, Ontario area writers at all levels of experience through the following:

Our General Meeting which falls on the third Thursday of each month. Open to the public, our general meetings are a great place to meet other writers who are earnest about honing their prose and being published. As a result, we strive to provide something of real value for those who attend. During 2007-2008 we found that providing a mix of programs worked well, so we expect to continue on this path during 2008-2009. Look for us to:
  • Host guest speakers presenting on topics of interest to our writing community
  • Host authors/writing professionals to give us the benefit of their experiences and insight
  • Offer mini-workshops on topics of interest to writers
  • Provide opportunities to write via writing exercises
  • Provide at least one 'reading night,' wherein writers can read short pieces out loud
  • Throw our annual holiday party on the third Thursday in December

Critique Groups are the heart of our society and we will continue to provide fiction, non-fiction and poetry critique groups for our membership. Prospective members are welcome to attend our critique groups and check them out. Not a workshop/classroom scenario, but a mutual effort by participants to respect, encourage and constructively critique each other's work, a good critique group is invaluable to those writers who participate in it. Scroll down on our home page for our current schedule.

Sponsor or co-sponsor literary events.

Post activities, news, and resources of value to the writers of London and Middlesex County on this website. (We plan to maintain an informational blog or blogs, establish an on-line critique forum and post videos of critique groups in action, so stay tuned.)
